Miles Overton (Best of Both Worlds)

Ask most kids, how to improve their game or how to break down schools and make a decisions. Most kids would struggle. Not Miles Overton , He's prepared for the future. One of the main reasons is...having a strong background starting with playing for one of the best coaches in Philadelphia Basketball History in Speedy Morris, who has coached at Roman Catholic & LaSalle University and now St. Joseph Prep.

Overton is a 6'3" G that just so happens to have the last name of Doug Overton, who just happens to be his father. D.O. has he is known, played at my alum (Dobbins High) and then moved on to LaSalle University and then drafted in the second round of the 1991 Draft to the Detroit Pistons and had a solid 14 year career. Now He's a position in the NBA's Nets organization.

Miles has offered by VCU, Drexel, Delaware, James Madison, San Fran, LaSalle. It seems as though, St. John's, UVA, Kansas, Rutgers, Maryland, Arizona St., Seton Hall, VTech, Penn State are all showing interest. He talks about how working out with pros and his dad in the summer time has really helped his game. He has shown improvement, even down to being able to post up guards to being able to hit the open shots and breaking down defenses. He has the complete package. It has made it known, that he definitely is proud of where he's from and enjoys learning from his father. He has taken so much of mental part of the game, that has helped him grow as a player a tough nose city. Even down to being invited to the Top 100 & Reebok Breakout Camp this past summer. He also talked to me about how he likes grow on his own also and be an original so people know, he can step up to the plate with his own game.

Keep an eye on this guy. By having the best of both worlds. He'll definitely have a bright future and make some great improvement through the time in his game.

Amile Jefferson (Philly's Finest)

Amile Jefferson... What can you say about this kid? McDonald's All American Nominee, Ranked 24th in the country, 3 Straight League & State Championship, All State & District, Top 100 Camp, Elite 24 & the list goes on. This kid probably has more trophies than any high school player that has ever played the game in the Philadelphia area. This past summer, he continued to work on his game and did a tremendous job during the summer with his AAU program. He continues to get recognition but if there is anything that catches the focus of other. It's the fact, he hasn't committed yet.

He is a 6'8" 195 lb. Foward with all the abilities that are needed to win. Not to forget, he attends one of the most prestigious programs in the Philadelphia area in Friends Central ...The same school that Hakim Warrick (Phoenix Suns), Mustafa Shakur (Overseas), Mike Cook (Overseas) and a host of others have attended to continue their success. He has been getting offers from schools like Villanova, NC State, Ohio State, Stanford, Temple, Maryland, not too mention interest from UConn & Kentucky. He seems to be the player to watch this year & people have really kept real good close. His father Malcolm Musgrove is at all his games and has been a tremendous support for the future of his career. Even though, everybody wants to know where he is going and what he will do for the future. One thing for sure, He'll do great wherever he goes and he is surely focused on winning his fourth straight title. He seems to be enjoying every moment of what should a excellent year.

On June 18, 2011 at Marcus Foster Stadium (Gratz Field) in the North Philly off Hunting Park Ave. was one of the best camps that ever hit the scene for football. Players from all around the city were gathered together to work on their individual skills and improve as a football player. The players would come from as north as Washington High School in Northeast High School & all the way south as Bartram High School in South West Philly. The event would start the day before with talking about what it takes to get into college and the process of getting paper work done for the college.

The camp would have over 200 football players who would show their talents off in front of scouts including SCOUT.COM. The players would constantly talk about the enjoyment of them being able to play with and against other top athletes in the area. One player, Keith Jenkins from Prep Charter Football Program, who plays Offensive Tackle & Defensive End, would show up big in lineman drills. He would be the fastest lineman out there and would show his great technique and footwork. He would describe his experience as, "this is once in a lifetime, i'm getting the opportunity to workout and learn how to become a better football player with one of the league best football players".

That player who is one of the best, was none other than Jahri Evans of the New Orleans Saints. He is one of the most respected football players in the league for his ability as a lineman to block for Super Bowl Champs in 2010. Jahri, not only was an 4th round pick but played at a D2 school on a academic scholarship. He was joined by 4 other NFL undrafted players, who have made the NFL a place for their skills. Dominique Curry (St. Louis Rams-WR), Taj Smith (Ind. Colts- WR), Jameel McClain (Baltimore Ravens- LB) & Curtis Brinkley (San Diego Chargers- RB) and a future pro in Shariff Floyd (Florida Gator) all helped out during the camp with giving instructions and supporting the future college football prospects from the city.

After talking to the NFL & High School Players, they talked about how they enjoyed the camp and give much thanks to the sponsors (Modell's, Chick-fil-A, Powerade, L4T, KAPLAN, Triumph Baptist Church & the School District of Philadelphia). Also on hand was District XII Chairman, Robert Coleman, who talked about how important it is to have events like these in order to improve the awareness of sports in the city and getting the kids the opportunity to see what it takes to be a pro.

There's nothing like playing in a big classic. A classic that has existed since 2001 & has been a huge traditional piece for the city of Philly. Even in whatever condition the weather it is, there always seems to be a huge show up for this event every year and it showcases the best player around.

In this classic, there are 2 guys who showed you what hunger was and their future seems to look very bright...Rondae Jefferson (Chester) & Rysheed Jordan (Vaux). The two guys will both be Jr. next year & they play with the intensity needed to show how big the game is getting and that there is no reason to count basketball out for the future. Guys like Wayne Ellington (Timberwolves), Rasual Butler (Chicago Bulls) & Craig Brackins (Sixers) congratulated these young men for their talent. The ability to be coached by these guys has to be a tremendous feeling for guys who hope to be in their position one day. There is nothing like playing your best and finding was to play as if it was your last game.

Jefferson & Jordan both had 18 pts. but showed their keen ability to not stop at any moment. They wanted to keep their teams close and show the ability to make place all over the place. They definitely showed their big time game in this one like they have been doing all season. Keep an eye on these two for the near future.

On May 28th, at 6pm...Pennington, NJ would be taken over by Alex "the Great" Kline. Alex had been emotional for years about the passing of his mother and what better what to do something in memory of her, than using his powers to put together something that would be remembered for ever. Alex would then begin to organize the Mary Kline Classic. An event that would feature over 20 D1 Players who have committed to a range of different schools such as Pitt, Georgetown, LaSalle, St. John's, Rutgers, Marshall, N.C. State, Clemson, Louisville & many others, who are from the Mid-Atlantic Region of the country.

Alex has one particular characteristic that people are so interested in...which is his age. At the age of 16, Alex has excelled in writing for not only his own website http://www.therecruitscoop.com/ but for Rivals and other mega sources around the country. Alex has been a huge force behind the recruiting and scouting circuit and for him to organize such an event, there seem to be nothing he couldn't do. This game would be in the memory of his mother Mary Kline, who had departed this world but remained in his heart. She was diagnosed with malignant brain tumor, and was given 18 months to live but remained with the Kline family for 5 years until her departure. Alex would organize this classic to raise money to fight cancer for the American Cancer Society and the National Brain Tumor Society.

This game would feature huge play by some great talent that would and could be future NBA prospects. One of the biggest names on hand would be Khem Birch (Notre Dame Prep/Pitt), who was recently a McDonald's/Jordan Brand All American and is rated the #1 Center in the country. Khem would contribute 12 pts. 13 rbs. 4 asst. & 2 blks. He showed the ability to finish threw aggressive play, play great help defense & just keep smiling the entire game. Jabril Trawick (Abington Friends/Georgetown) would be the show stopper being able to take 2 trophies home as the Dunk Contest Winner (which can be viewed above us) and MVP for his team having 17 pts. 8 rbs. 4 stls. Devin Coleman (Friends Central/Clemson) would come out hot in the first half leading his team in scoring as they broke through with a huge lead after the first, He would finish with 15 pts. & 4 asst. Tyler Harris (St. Benedict/NC State), would play big with 22 pts. & 6 rbs. as he made all the necessary moves and prominent decisions to help his team. Angel Nunez (Notre Dame Prep/Louisville) would play big with 11 pts. 5 rbs. & 3 asst. and show some great athletic ability and game time intensity. But this game would be dominated and have a great showing by Jerrell Wright (Dobbins/LaSalle) who played tremendously well shooting the ball, inside defense, running the floor & even passing the ball. He won MVP of the winning team with 14 pts. 9 rbs. 5 asst. & 3 blks. He showed the play that scouts had been missing and excluded, but after the game, many recognized him as one of the best players that they have seen around playing tremendously out the gate against whoever would play him.

In the end, the game is listed as a success. There is no doubt in my mind that Alex's mother is proud of his ability to do such a great thing for society and make a huge contribution to the future of many different basketball players. This event would raise $7,000 dollars and bring upon many different potential future ideas and concepts of this event. It was a great turnout and huge fan base would get to see the future of basketball before their eyes. Alex mentioned to the media, "I am truly grateful and humbled by the experience of the players attending, when they didn't have to and they are from all over, they played tremendously well and had a great attitude towards the entire event, which I loved, I can't thank everyone enough for making one of my dreams come true and I will continue to do so, every year so that we can continue to see the future of basketball and even bigger, contribute to a great cause for the world"

On a side note: Jalen Gaffney from Columbus, NJ who is in 4th grade put on a show for the crowd at halftime. He would make tremendous play with his vision and show his incredible ball handling skills. He played wonderful defense and shows his great IQ of the game on the floor. Congratulations to the NJABC basketball program for having such great children play and develop their skills towards their future.

Joe Reid...Where the Lone-Stars are born!

Ask 6'7" Joe Reid, where will you be attending college at next year, 3 weeks ago...You might get an easy answer..."Where I best fit". Now, for some, that might not be a good answer, for his family and others...it's just right. After talking to Joe, he seemed to only be concerned with going somewhere, where he would be comfortable and they would treat him like a family.

Joe was a really good player dating back to his days at Gratz High School, where he would learn to fit in a system that was actually built for his success in the first place. With Joe's performance in high school and highly creditable athletic ability. Joe would soon find out, how much of a better player he could be. Joe would start to receive interest from different colleges about his interest in departing Barton CCC and going into a four year school and being able to make the best of his career somewhere.

In his abilities and development, Texas A&M International would jump on the scene and see something in him that most people wouldn't see...THE POTENTIAL. His Potential would be what he needed to have to make people realize how much of a player he truly could be compared to his great skill now. Joe consistently worked out and focused on his grades and now has found a home in the "Lone-Star" State. The state where everything is big and he will have the opportunity to join the same guys writing on his facebook wall that, they are so eluded to have him join the program next season. Joe also goes into discussion about how his coaches told him what type of player he is and will become with the program and they need him to take it to the next level, seeing that this team had made it to the national tournament this season. Watch out for Joe Reid...He'll be a "Lone-Star" with this family and system of his.

E. Copes...Following in Line!

Following the leader is not always easy, but when things happen for a reason, they tend to be set up in the best interest for the success portion of a person's future career.

It seemed as though, Erik Copes, 6'9" Big from Imhotep Charter was caught in a pretty difficult situation. What's the situation?...

Basically you want the best for yourself but you also don't know where you might fit. With him & his Uncle (Coach Houston), looking upon the different situations going on & there being a need at George Mason, where their head coach would leave and go to Miami University, here comes the dynamic duo. Even though, Erik's Uncle was probably a huge concern and a thought about what would happen because of the departure of Coach Hobbs, there was a great situation that had opened at George Mason in the hiring of Coach Paul Hewitt, who is known for his huge stint at Georgia Tech University.

After texting back and forth with Erik after his commitment, I asked him about what he felt in terms of his commitment. Copes tells me, "It's great for me & I'm ready to get started". I would then go on to tell him, "I remember being on the bench at my alum (IUP) and we took Georgia Tech into overtime and playing against those tremendous bigs he developed". He then would remind me, "don't forget, Chris Bosh was under him". So with Chris Bosh first, then Derrick Favors next, the question is who's the next big talent that will come from under the Hewitt tree...I guess it will be Copes.

He plays with the intensity and as all the natural ability and mentality of a great big. With the system that Hewitt runs, there will be plenty of opportunities for him to be successful, and it does help that his Uncle is going to join him there. Great to see that he sees the bigger picture in all of this, where people might not understand.

Congratz & I wish you the best of luck. Fairfax is going to enjoy this one.

See how Brown gets Down!

Earl Brown who stands at 6'6" from Imhotep Charter jumped on the scene very early when he was freshmen in high school. As a freshmen and sophomore, he was very productive at Freire Charter. He would find many different ways to help his team reach the fullest potential possible. Something just wasn't right for Brown at Freire and he transfered over to Imhotep, where he would excell early scoring 269 pts. in his junior year. He would then understand what victory tasted like on and off the court. He would show his ability to be athletic and get people to notice how good a player he was. He took his game to another level when he decided to take a back seat in order to help the better production of the team. Earl would not crack the starting line up but would be a huge piece in the success of his team winning a state title this past season. Not only, did he earn the opportunity to win a state & city title but he would also earn a scholarship offer to St. Francis (PA).

If you talk to Brown about why St. Francis, he would tell you, "OPPORTUNITY". He explain "imagine getting the opportunity to play, get a great education, work hard and people from home would be able to see me play". Even though Brown didn't get the biggest looks and could have easily prepped and went bigger, he found a home in St. Francis (Pa).

After the visits and great experience and help from his team, he would show that he can be as productive as anybody else, by coming up big for his team when they needed him, including his big game in the state championship. He realized his time would come and now the guy who came off the bench with great upside, has now found a place to play Division 1 basketball and make a huge impact from the beginning to the end of his career.

I wish Earl the best in his next four years.

Sometimes the future comes in many different forms, but one thing everybody in the Conshocken Fellowship House Gym yesterday realized was the future is bright for all these guys (if they stay on the path of Hard Work & Faith). Success sometimes never is achieved at an early age but these guys who played in the 2011 Underclassmen Game for the Coaches vs. Cancer showed they are above and beyond the expectations.

I received the chance to watch some of the future bright stars (Soph. & Jrs.) of high school basketball.

The first game featured Underclassmen from the Suburbs & the Catholic League. This game would get exciting and interesting early with Jordan Reed (Wissahickon) coming out with some extremely high difficultly dunk including one alley-oop from half court for him to reverse dunk it. He showed he could extend his range and some great jump shots and he scored 9 of the first 16 points for his team. He would do it all to lead help lead his team in the first half. Miles Overton (St. Joseph's Prep) & Shafeek Taylor (Roman Catholic) would join the mix with to help their team go on a 16-0 run. Taylor would show how elite he was scoring on three different defenders and have the ability to work hard and smooth for each basket. Erikk Wright (Chester) would start up his powerful game with great finishes at the rim and great defensive plays. Wright would put on a show for the crowd and help his team leap back into a lead at half. John Davis (Neumann-Goretti) would help his team gain the lead back by having an electrifying dunk in the first half over another player. Davis showed he could hit shots from the outside and bang with the big guys in the inside. Craig Slade (Bonner) would show the ability to dribble the ball up the court, play defense and score the ball when needed. Reed would get back into his rhythm and make some other extremely tough plays while Overton would be nothing but spectacular by continuing his scoring threat to keep his team close as he would score 16 points in the second half. Wright would finish the game off strong to lead his team to a 115-109 win over the Catholic team and receive MVP.

Billy Shank (Neumann-Goretti) was truly a big factor in the game going 3-5 from the 3 point line. Rondae Jefferson (Chester) was himself, as he would show his high skills & abilities to get to the rim and pull up for jump shots.

In the second game, the trend of elite play would continue as this game would feature the Independent vs. the Public. This game would get off to a rough start but Amile Jefferson (Friends Central), would give a great spark for his team and get others involved. Jefferson would show all signs of elite play, including his 360 dunk in the second half. Marcus Gilbert (ANC), who was the game's MVP, would get involved and show his extremely high athletic ability. He would play really good defense and show signs that he could pull up for jumpers. Jeremiah Worthem (MCS) would help the public team with his hard plays to the rim. Daniel Ochefu (Westtown/Villanova) would throw down some strong dunks and blockshots to help his team defensively & keep people from entering the paint. He would penetrate the defense and get inside for tough buckets to lead his team in scoring. Savon Goodman (ANC/Villanova) would come off the bench to extend the lead with his extraordinary dunks and attacks to the rim during the entire game. Malik Garner (Chestnut Hill) would also create great plays for himself and others and show his ability to dribble around others and show some versatility. Daiquan Walker (Constitution) would show off his nasty ankle breaking moves & ability to make difficult lay ups and shots. To solidify the game was getting out of hand, Goodman would pass the ball on a fast break to Gilbert and Gilbert would throw the ball high off the back board with his right hand and Goodman would jump high to catch the ball and finish strong with a two hand dunk. Independent would win 111-79.

On another note (X-Factors):

Maurice "Doo-Wop" Watson (Boy's Latin) would show signs of great play and ability to pass the ball with 7 assist, along with 12 smooth looking but hardworking points. Hans Brase (Hill School) played very well in finishing at the rim and have a sweet touch in shooting ability. Khyree Wooten (Imhotep) would also play a strong game and show the reason why he is one of the most exciting and hardworking players to watch in the league (BTW...nice dunk between the legs at the end of the game).

SOMETHING WILL GIVE (Eddie Mitchell)

Something has to give...you (mentally) or you (physically). When you talk to Eddie Mitchell, a 6'1" pg of LaSalle High, who has signed to play at Rider University next year. He will tell you in plain words, "I like watching myself play". It seems as though, others like to watch him play too.

In watching Eddie play, you tend to get amazed by the things he can do. Eddie, this season was not only all district, he was all city first year and all state. His play lead him to averaging 16 ppg and he found a way every game to help his team win. LaSalle came in 2nd place in the catholic league this year and showed they could play with anybody even though, they did not have same talent as other teams.

Eddie took exactly what he had this season and pulled out some good wins. He showed why he belongs in the elite level of guards. He's extremely athletic and has the ability to really have a impact on the floor when he has the ball in his hands. There is no denying that he will be continue this trend into college.

There is always a Chance (IUP Commit)

Sometimes, there comes a moment where players move on and things tend to shake up a program. The big challenge that IUP has is trying to find out where to start when you have reached the sweet sixteen 2 years in a row and now all of a sudden you find yourself without Thomas Young (MVP of the CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT/PSAC West) after reaching the National Championship & then the following year repeating as conference champs losing Darryl Webb (09-10) regional MVP/(10-11) NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR/CONFERENCE MVP.

How about signing Devante Chance, 5'10" premier point guard from Philadelphia Electric & Technology Charter School. His team is coached by Coach James "Flame" Lewis, a former Roman Catholic star. He not only found a home there but found a way by the end of his career to be given the award of ALL DISTRICT & ALL CITY came up with some big numbers, such as 27 pts. 6 rbs. & 3 stls. against Constitution in the Imhotep Showcase, 19 pts. & 7 asst. in the public league quarterfinals vs. Vaux in OT. and not to forget he was undefeated in the regular season and up until he played Imhotep in the semifinals.

This kid has all the makings of a great D2 player. Many believe he would have been also good for D1, but for him, there's nothing like playing at a program that he has been use to watching. One of his close mentors is Thomas Young who attended IUP for 2 years and was a great elite player. He explained to me, "to see Thomas dominate the game and have such a huge impact, I feel I can do the same", He also talked about how Coach Lombardi (Head Coach), came down to visit him and when he saw his National Finalist ring, he stated "I want one of those for myself, matter fact, I'm going to get one, but mine will say National Championship" He will be a impact player from the jump as Kevin Stewart, who was a great product for IUP was the starting point guard at IUP and helped them reach the high points of their season.

If you ask Chance, how do you feel about the shoes you have to fill. He say, "I'm ready". The opportunity to play in the best arena facility in D2 in the new Kovalchick Complex which seats 5,000 and will be the host of 2011-2012 season. All smiles for Chance. So is there any chance that IUP will bounce back strong.

Terrell "Sleepy" Daye (West Philly), Carrington Ward (P.E.T.), Mamadou Diakite (Constitution), Tyreek "Ty-Ty" Riddick (MCS)

On Sunday April 10th, 2011...Retroaction/Runhouse.net put on a senior show case with some of the top seniors in the area who are unsigned and looking for an opportunity to play next year in a college setting. The two games started off at 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock. The two games provided coaches from all over the opportunity look at some top prospects that have yet to sign on the dotted line to help change around and enhance their programs.

In the first game featured some really high prospects from the area that continued to show that they could play on a high level if they use their skills in the right way.

Carrington Ward (P.E.T.) who could easily be a big time prospect for a mid/low major D1 to an All American at the D2 level. In this game, he scored 34 pts. 5 rbs. 6 asst. and 5 stls. This kid has all the natural instinct of an elite player. He manages to stretch the game for himself and others in order to help his team win. He has a lot of upside being 6'3" and shows no sign of slowing down at attacking the rim. His game speaks in volumes He probably is the best unsigned player in the area, with his ability to shoot the ball, point guard skills, finishes hard and plays major defense.

Tyreek Riddick (MCS) 6'2" He scored 17 pts. & 4 asst. while hitting four 3 pointers. He's a sharpshooter, show some great signs of life in the game. He makes everything around him come to him naturally. He showed signs of a handle and the ability to get up on players. He's been a real true threat to players lately and makes no mistake in forgetting about the last play and continuing on. I think he would be a great D2 player, especially in a 4-out or 5-out or transitional type of team.

Mamadou Diakite (Constitution) 6'5" Big Bully inside...He's built like a football player. He looks like he should be playing for Penn State or Temple but has made a constant upward development progress in his game. He made some great plays in rout to 15 pts. and 12 rbs. He seems to not step away from contact and finished hard on 3 occasion where he scored a basket and a free throw. He has great touch from the line and gets up and down the floor pretty good. He's definitely a D2 Player but would be a great D3 player.

Terrell Daye (West Philly) 6'3" Left handed guard who attacks the rim. He shows signs of a really good D2 player and still has room to grow and improve. He has great upside and he will be a really good player. He has the attitude that nobody else has and people really sleep on him. He makes the game come him through being everywhere on the floor to make sure that he can stay in the flow of things. He scored 19 pts. and 8 rbs. I think he could be something special.

Other recognitions:

Kenny Johnson (Abington Friends) 6'2"---Plays with passion but has all the IQ's of an elite player, could be a D1 player after JUCO but a very effective D2 player if he goes that rout. Either way wouldn't be bad. 11 pts.

Chris Stokes (MCS) 6'0"---scored 12 pts. in this game and showed he could hit the outside shot and make smart decisions on the floor. He definitely is a leader on the floor if given the opportunities and has the skills to make adjustments through the game.

Elijah Bradley (School of the Future) 6'6"---He grabbed 15 rebounds. He solidly made the game look easy on the boards. He went up strong with 2 hands and grabbed everything. Great catch and finish. He's very long and athletic and could be a easy 4 on the D2 or D3 level.

Bakari White/ Terrell Johnson (Imhotep) 5'9"---Both are the same size and you could get away from either one. I think both could play on the D2 level but would great in a D3 setting. They have the ability to push the ball up the floor and looks for others in transition.

Basir Fulmore (Dobbins) 6'3"---Has skills and shows ability to attack the rim. He has the skills to play on the D2 level but could also be a JUCO kid. He knows the game and is a true general on the floor. He definitely has a future in college and would be hard to pass on.

Jose Figueroa (Plumstead Christian) 6'6"---His height doesn't describe his game. He reminds of you a bigger kid. Like a guy that could stand toe to toe with someone 6'8". Has great hands and finishes well around the rim, runs the floor and sets up hard. I like this guy for D2.

Elijah Johnson (Lamberton) 6'5"---GREAT SIZE and can shoot the ball. He makes players off and on the ball. He has great mechanics and has consistency with the game. He could be a serious matchup problem for players in D2.

In the second game,

Tyree Johnson (Penn Wood) 5'9" scored 20 pts. & had 10 asst. He has a sharp eye for the floor. He's so fast and has the ability to make plays all over the place. He's a very strong individual that has all the talent in the world to be a D1 player. He was a RBK All American Player.

Mark Wilmer (Prep Charter) 6'6" scored 20 pts. 15 rbs. With JUCO or Prep School work could play low D1 but would be much more effective at the high level in D2. He always seems to be overlooked but has the ability to finish around the rim and is always in the right place.

Markeith Mont (World Comm.) 6'5" scored 16 pts. & makes all the proper decision. This kid was all public/all city/all state and the mvp of his division and one of the top scorers in the city this year, scoring well over 1,000 points in his career. With JUCO or Prep School, he's definitely D1. He's gotten looks from VCU, LaSalle & Rider at one point. He definitely can play the game.

Tyhiem Perrin (Imhotep) 6'4" scored 12 pts. and grabbed 9 rbs. He's is an everything type of guy. Even though he plays guard, he could be a huge prospect for a team looking for someone to be consistent, tough and effective in every way. This is the kid, I would pick up for any purpose, especially defensively.

Darrell Robinson (Bartram) 5'11" scored 16 pts. He's really a quick guard and has all the potential to play on different levels. I think he would benefit from JUCO and would be a solid D2 player and would make a difference on any time in so many different ways.

Earl Brown (Imhotep) 6'6" scored 13 pts. and had 12 rbs. He makes the game come very easy with the minimum amount of shots he takes. He would easily be a big time player if he played for another school. He has D1 talent and skill. He is a solid 4 man but can develop into a great 3. I like the future of this kid. He would dominate D2 if used right and developed.

Andrew Moye (Gratz) 6'3" scored 16 pts. and all the hustle plays during the entire game. He had 6 stls. and made it very difficult for his opponent to score. He never forces things but he is the hard nose player that schools are looking for. I heard some really good D2 schools are after him. He approaches the game with the go-getter attitude.

Others to watch:

Turhan Griffin 6'1" (FLC)---He has the point guard mentality but can shoot the ball. He has skills that would put him in good class of players. He makes very good decisions and makes others around him so much better. He's definitely a D2 talent.

Barry Brockington 6'4" (Bartram)---Mr. Everything. He makes the game come easy because of his decision making. He knows when to run the floor, he can beat any man of the dribble and has pretty good athletic ability and length. He's definitely a D2 talent.

Thomas Moore 5'11" (MCS)---Go-getting guard. I like this kids style. Very smooth and consistent with what he does. He picks and chooses his battles and knows where and what to do with the ball. He's a great on and off the ball defender also. Very quick and elusive. D2

Warren Dogan 6'2" (MCS)---When under control, could be the most lethal player around. He actually has a D1 mentality towards the game with a few adjustments, that I know he could make. He definitely can shoot and get up the floor. D2 effectively.

Sometimes there are things we just can't explain...JABRIL TRAWICK & JERRELL WRIGHT MIGHT BE 2 OF THOSE THINGS ON THE LIST OF MANY!

Reason being is...God has created 2 guys that are tremendously gifted with the ability to play the game at a high level.

Trawick will be attending Georgetown University next year in the Big East Conference and will showcase his talent every home game in the Verizon Center in the Chinatown of D.C. Trawick has been a huge lift for his school's program and created a huge name for himself just about a summer ago where he would take off and do amazing things. He showed some of that in the Labor Classic when he did the "statue of liberty dunk". Trawick would score 14 pts. & lead the suburbs over the city boys in a 114-111 win. He's made so many people a believer and has worked tremendously on his skill for the future.

Wright will be attending LaSalle University next year in the Atlantic 10 Conference and will showcase his talent every home game in the Tom Gola Arena in the Olney Section of Philly. Wright not only dominated his division in scoring but he provided the opportunity to put Dobbins High back on top, as one of the top basketball programs in the public league. His 6'8" frame rocked some old throwback Dobbins shorts from the 80's that would help him show off the old school in his first official game on the Tom Gola Arena floor & scored a cool 11 pts. with a few moves with an up and under move.

WATSON & KILLING (ISAA BOY'S SHOWCASE MVP)

With some of the best unsigned talent at the helm, ISAA decided to come up with an all star game to host some of the best unsigned underclassmen and seniors in the area from Philly & Jersey.

The game featured some of the most exclusive talent in the area such as some of the Philly talent in Kawuan Chavis (Washington-Pa), Terrell Daye (West Philly), Ky Howard (Shipley), Basir Fulmore (Dobbins), Mark Wilmer (Prep Charter), Malik Wesley, Karonn Davis (Friends Central).

New Jersey featured some top players such as Danny Wilson (Overbrook, NJ), Kyle Clarke (Life Center), Dominio Cain (Wilingboro), Ernie Harper (Lower Cape May), Richard Smith (Winslow), Kyle Johnson (Pennsauken).

BUT THIS ALL STAR SHOWCASE BELONGED TO MAURICE WATSON, who is a 5'9" guard who attends Boy's Latin High School and scored 20 points in the game and has the ability to make things happen anywhere on the floor. Watson has continued to do damage and do great things in the public league in Philadelphia as he has scored 1600 points in his career in 3 years and has been all public for the last 3 years. You can only expect big things from this guy of big heart nature.

MALIQUE KILLING, who is 5'8" from Friends Central High, came in this game with the mentality to prove himself. A lot of people never understood how important he is as a player to his team this past year and now people are starting to recognize his ability. He scored an outstanding 18 points in the game and showed he could hold his own and make the proper players to lead his team for the senior team. Look for this kid on the target for recruiting. His athletic ability and decision making makes him fearless.

Daiquan Walker & Khyree Wooten: Next up!

Who's next in line for greatness you say?...How about the kid who drop 18 Points in his first public league championship game & averaged over 20 PPG for the year and will be considered highly for MVP this year for POY.

Daiquan Walker is a 6'2" G from Constitution High School who has the ability to destroy a team with his quick moves, great vision and enormous pride in his skill. He makes everything look easy and he always turns it up when he needs to do so. He makes things happen no matter where he is on the floor and seems to have what it takes to be a big time D1 player at the next level.
His summer will be as heavy has his buzz this year in the public league. Take nothing away from this kid. He is built for success. Congratz on his accomplishments this year.

Khyree Wooten is a 6'3" G from Imhotep Charter known for his athletic ability and seems to stop for nothing. He makes all the proper plays and takes pride in his defense. He's one of those very strong, lengthy talents that have nothing but success ahead. He dunks the ball with authority and he can stay in the air as long as a glider plane. He only had 5 Points in the championship game but don't tell him that. He's smiling from ear to ear about his future at Imhotep.

He is transfer from the same team that knocked Imhotep out of state championship competition last year, Strawberry Mansion. Wooten makes the necessary adjustments in his game to help his team when they need the lift and I bet he understands how tough it is to be in a different role but I bet he's even happier to have the opportunity to be on one of the greatest dynasties in Public League History. Glad to see that Wooten is taking his special skills and making it happen...

It took him some time, maybe more time then what most people would have thought, but one Philadelphia area's top secrets is no longer. The left handed SG has finally committed his next four years to Clemson University.

That's right...Devin Coleman 6'3" SG will be playing in the ACC next year. Known for being lethal with his jump shot. Dev will be looking towards having a great four year career at Clemson University and working towards more championships in the college ranks.

If that isn't enough, he was joined again this year with Amile Jefferson, Malique Killing & Karonn Davis to win the friends league title and independent state title. Seems like his life is headed in the right direction and I know being in the south will definitely be a great start to having a wonderful career. Congratz to Dev.

Imhotep is lead by Coach Noble, who has taken the Public League by storm and made every adjustment needed to make sure every year is as tremendous as the year before. This team is built and play together for success and it's great to see them accomplish their goals they had in store for this year.

With Dave Appolon, Erik Copes, & Ameen Tanskley leading this team. There is nothing this team can't accomplish. This team took on a national schedule and the possible future state championship this year. They lead their team with such great potential and It's going to be great to see what they have in store for the future.

In "the Pub", there is child's play & then the man-like approach. This definitely one of those games, there is no sleeping.

Ameen Tanksley 6'5" WG, will be taking his productivity to Niagara University next year under Coach Joe Mihalich. He not only gave people a preview of what they will expect in college next year but he showed he can make the best of any situation. Tanskley has been averaging 13.5 a game this year but came up with 15 in this one.

If you talk to him, he'll probably tell you, his leadership is always needed when things get rough and boy did it get that way. I asked him before game was he going to put on a show. He told me "Sure". I guess that was enough for me to hear to be certain he would. He seemed confident and he came in with the swag needed to maintain his usual play for the game. If you think next year will be easy for a team that is finishing at the bottom in the division this year, I think the load just got lighter with his performance. Not to mention, his friend who won MVP of the Catholic League Juan'ya Green is joining him.

Shon Phillips...Growin' in2 his own

Shon Phillips 6'1" PG from World Communication knows everything about making the best of any situation. To watch your team go down hard last year because of little mistakes and now trying to erase those thoughts and start wit something new for him self. It's definitely helpful when you have someone supporting you. No one has been any close of a supporter than his mother Val Phillips, who was a All American Basketball Player from Virginia State. Coming from a basketball family, he knew nothing but basketball and has worked had to make the transition.

The transition started when he was in Overbrook and things really didn't seem positive to have the opportunity to attend a quality school and play basketball...but that would change with a World Communication needing a solid PG who knew the game and was smart with the basketball. This is where Shon would step in. He would make move to Broad & South Street and his grades would then improve and he would begin to really think about the opportunity of play college basketball.

He's been a huge production but hasn't been giving the clearest look for college. He's a 2 year starter at a program and averaging 10 ppg., 4.3 asst., 6.3 rbs., 4 stls. and a block a game which has improved the team to the point where they are 15-5 and have a number 3 seeding for the playoffs this year. They have not only worked hard towards making a better effort for the championship but they expect Phillips to lead them to the promise land with this quick handle, defensive skills, aggressive movement and smart playing. Hopefully...this will transcend him into college. Check out his highlights...

"You'll regret it"...DJ Newbill

If you follow high school basketball and especially last year, the story of the year had to be DJ Newbill 6'4" Point Guard, who graduated from Strawberry Mansion and planned to make his way to Marquette University. One problem...those plans changed to Southern Miss University. If you talk to DJ, he would tell you that it was probably the best thing that could have ever happened. He's in a position, where he is in a winning programing, starting as the key Point Guard and life couldn't be more grand then it is now.

After going 28-2 at Strawberry Mansion under Coach Stan Laws, going 1st team all state, city and public, McDonald's All American Nominee, not to mention going deep into both playoffs and being the best player in the Public League last year, he is now averaging 9.2 ppg, 1.6 asst. & 6.1 rbs. including 17 Pts. against Michael Jordan's son Marcus at UCF and a 14-5 record for the season. He is looking towards winning his conference and heading into the tournament and more awards for the year.

As you can see he's definitely on the right page and with the right work, one day...Marquette will be trying to find out why they didn't hold on to their commitment to Newbill. Definitely BIG UPS to DJ.

"Rising 2 the Occasion"..."Flip" Johnson

If you know Flip, then you would know, he's closer to 2,000 points in his high school career then most people would think. John Johnson aka "Flip" who has signed to play for Jamie Dixon next year at University of Pittsburgh, home of the Panthers. One thing, what to do before you get there.

How about teaming up with one of America's premier talent at Life Center (Burlington, NJ) in LaQuinton Ross (Ohio State signee) and rise to the occasion.

When you talk to John, he speaks with confidence and has all the natural abilities and skill to make anything happen with his team. This is the same kid that won a state title at Girard College (PA) and never looked back. With the ability to dribble diligently up the floor with a the quickness of a cat, the vision of a eagle and the fire of a forest burning...there isn't too much this kid can't do. If you think he won't prevail at Pitt, you are slightly mistaken. Definitely good to know that he's willing to take on any task and play up to anybody expectations.

I remember when this kid was younger. He was shorter than me, middle school, & really didn't know what sport would be his real true future. Now I can say..."I know what this kid has been through to get where he's at". Ronald Curry...

6'3" 175 pound STAR point guard from Paul VI High in South Jersey. When you ask him what will be his new home...there's no doubt in his head that James Madison University in Virginia is apart of that answer. The school is lead by Matt Brady, who is an alum of Paul VI and had been constantly working hard for a kid that would soon blow up to become one of NJ's top players.

Now when you google his name: "PHILLY GUARD COMMITS TO JMU"...I know it's a great feeling, especially when you are catching fire in the league you play in. He's been really hot lately for his team. His aggressive play and ability to lead his team as a point guard has been really great. He has kept his team undefeated and they have now beaten some top teams in the area such as Camden Catholic (17 Pts.), Lenape (23 Pts.), including a close OT game against Washington (Pa.) (27 Pts.). It's great to see him lead his team in the right direction and will look towards finishing the season strong undefeated and winning a state title.

One of the biggest diminishing points about BASKETBALL is ACADEMICS...POINT, BLANK, PERIOD!

In society, we tend to overlook the things that make us who we are. If we see a doctor, we see his money but not the 8 to 12 years it took for him to get there. When we see look at the president, we see the power but we don't see the years he had to go to college and law school and deal with political issues and situations of the world. & with Athletes, we see the great skill and game that they have but we don't understand the biological, psychological and philosophical concepts behind why that player is who he is.

One of the huge reasons behind the society's failing is because of ELIGIBILITY. Players sometimes take academics for granted because it's free. Sometimes Players substitute academics for stupidity. There is a huge difference in society with men then what it use to be. There use to be a time, where men felt proud about being academically strong. Now they just struggle and it's no worry because of the focus presented towards them.

BUT CAN I BLAME YOU?

3 things must change fully...

1. CHANGE THE IDEOLOGY OF THOSE WHO SURROUND THE ATHLETE (PEOPLE & MEDIA)....DON'T GLORIFY THE PRODUCT OVER THE PRODUCTION. Allow them to see that, education is the only way to win in sports. The smarter the athlete the better the game. The life of an athlete will definitely be increased by opportunities if they did so. IMAGINE IF ATHLETES WERE THEIR OWN AGENTS. People wouldn't make money off them, because of their ignorance. Adjust the families, friends & parents that surround them. "YOUR NETWORK IS WORTH YOUR NET WORTH"

2. Get more qualified people in place that are in control of sports...ALL AAU COACHES & HIGH SCHOOL COACHES SHOULD HAVE COLLEGE DEGREES AND COME WITH A PROFESSIONAL IDEOLOGY TO GIVE TOWARDS THE CHILDREN. If their coaches and people in place with sports are educated, that will strive them to be educated.

3. RAISE THE STANDARD FOR THE CHILDREN IN SPORTS. Stop allowing children to see athletes uneducated and reach to the NBA, because of that, it sends a sign that people don't have to be educated to make it, which isn't true. We need to be united as one people under a professional personification. Raise the criteria of athletes that play in college...make them higher than an everyday student. Allow them to know, IT'S A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT.

If these three things are done, we will definitely help the problem of athletes thinking they can reach the top without education or being eligible. Please find it in yourself to be ACADEMICALLY STRONG AND PROSPER IN THE WORLD OF INTELLIGENCE and not IGNORANCE.

QUICKLY...NAME ME A JUNIOR WITH MORE THAN A 1,000 POINTS....LoL....it's a joke...get it...there isn't any other ones but this kid...

Maurice Watson aka "Doo-Wop" is the ultimate bucket getter, especially for a guy that is only 5'9" barely. If you like to see somebody get buckets in bunch, Boy's Latin might be the place for that this year...shoot...next year too..LoL. When the show is on the line, this guys comes up to play.

Now that his team has reached another hurdle, we definitely have to see how he steps up to the plate on this one. & WHAT PLATE IS IT, YOU ASK?....3A....the league of the giants.

This is definitely a big jump from 1A...but there's a catch...Wop doesn't seem to be scared at all. He just straps up & it's all "HAND DOWN, MAN DOWN" from there...Good Luck this year!

Joey Gripper..."LET ME POINT IT OUT 4 U"

Persistent, Vision, Quickness....

Joey Gripper aka "a million & one plats" doesn't have every attribute in the world...but those three things...HE DOES!...When up to par, there really isn't much stopping him from seeing a pass that you don't. Sure...he plays with Jabril Trawick aka "animal", who committed to Georgetown & with some great help from Dylan Moody & Kenny Johnson, seems as though he's in pretty good shape this season. Unless you are looking for someone to lead this talented bunch.

Gripper hasn't been under the biggest spot light in the world, but he sure has done his job to help those other guys on his team stand out. Under the guidance of Abington Friends Basketball Program, there were able to do some really good things last year and seem to come back with fire in their stomach this year.

Gripper will definitely be looking to "POINT" things out on the floor this year that other people won't see and hit passes that only come natural for him. It's not always easy to take a back seat to someone else but the questions...is he really taking a back seat or he's just contributed big in other ways. Consistency is the name of the game for his book...GOOD LUCK TO THE KANGAROOS!

Talking about making sure your team is going to be just fine...

There is nothing like the feeling of being down 12-0 in the fourth quarter against a team (Rox) you are suppose to kill. Looking into a deep black hole with no sense of hope...all of sudden, there is something you hear from the general of a Dobbins team that lost the championship, the year before because of some things (a dumb decision) pulled on his own high school team, the day before the game. So Dobbins loses the championship that they should have won against Gratz, knowingly they beat them during the regular season 28-16.

But within every darkness, something must come to the light..."IN T-STAFF, WE TRUST"...the first team all city running back not only did what he told people he would do...he exceeded expectations by breaking 4 different school records, including most rushing yards in one season with 1,345 yards. This being weird, especially for a guy the season before was a Full Back. If you talk to Terrance Stafford aka T-Staff 6'0" 210 RB/LB (Temple on his heels), he's quick to say, "We can't be stopped, & I promised my team, we not leaving this Northeast Field without a championship". That's a BEAST, and what he promised his team showed up for that occasion. After Kevin Butler threw a Hell-Mary into end zone to Jamil Williams over two corner back, he reaches to the highest point to score the first touchdown to get the offense into a great motion. The after some power rushes for great first downs and monster tackles by Staff...there was nothing you could say...they were going to score and win this game. With about 35 seconds left...Kevin Butler made that true with a 1 yard rush by himself into the end zone. Stafford took his team from no Hope to pure Trust in what he said would happen....

Aquil Younger..."4ever Young"

It is said by law...we only get older. Unfortunately, that is not true to Aquil. He seems to only be getting YOUNGER.

Aquil is one of the fastest, if not the fastest guard around. He can get from one spot to another in no time & in most cases, you know when he's going to attack you, you just don't have enough quickness to beat him to his spot.

DOESN'T SEEM LIKE SOMEBODY WHO GETS OLDER!...L.o.L.
Well, Aquil Younger aka "the young one" will be taking his duty to a new home. He has left West Catholic to attend Gratz High School before he's off to Drexel University, the same powerhouse of Rasheed Wallace. Now he's in the position to take his game to the next level and help Gratz get that respect they deserve back. If you talk to Aquil, he will tell you, "last year's Gratz, was last year's Gratz". He is definitely on a new team with some great speed and athleticism, looking for another opportunity with guys like Andrew Moye, Niguel Caldwell & Charles Merritt, all ready to make that jump toward winning a championship this year & with the talent they have...anything is possible.

Let's just hope AQUIL STAYS (HOW CAN I SAY...OR HOV SAID) "4EVER YOUNG"

Mont & Howard...Under rated?...Not anymore!

There are 2 things I hate most in sports...
1. Cheating
2. Under rated players

Since I have no affect on the first one...I'll deal wit the 2nd one. I would like to focus on the 2 most under rated by highly focused players around.

If we are talking about talent in high school basketball...that must end this year. These two players I stand with are two of the most under rated players around. Players who have all the potential and game to play at any level but have not quit received the opportunity to show that.

This picture is from a year ago in the summer of 09 when I attended the national top sophomore & freshmen camp in the country...where highly ranked players like Ricardo Ledo, Alex Murphy (Duke), Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke), Landen Lucas, & Khem Birch (Pitt) attended.

Ky Howard (Shipley) & Markeith Mont (World Comm) attended the camp after having a outstanding headliner camp. Along with proving themselves, they had outstanding high school careers so far. In Mont's soph. year he averaged 19.1 ppg & then jumped to 21.9 ppg in his jr. year. In Howard's soph. year, he lead the friends league with 16.7 ppg & then in his jr. year, he remained the scoring champ with 17.6 ppg.

These two players have not only helped lead their program in many different ways but also have been league MVPs of the well-respected Sonny Hill League & have not slowed down in anyway to march into a very promising season. It's no telling what these two will do this season, but based on what their skill level is and what they have been doing...YOU WILL ONLY SEE AN INCREASE. Underrated...I THINK SO...HIGHLY!

What if I told you the best senior in the CITY, maybe the entire area committed to LaSalle University...YOU'D PROBABLY SAY I'M CRAZY!...

We'll guess what...It's true...Along with playing with an Under Armour AAU Program (HUNTING PARK WARRIORS)...he's has committed his next four years of basketball to another Under Armour sponsored program LaSalle University.

Jerrell Wright aka "Da Dippah" 6'8" PF/C from the North Philly section of Philadelphia. Not only does he live in North Philly but he has taken his game to another height by committing himself to stay at his Dobbins CTE program under Coach Will Johnson to help lift the program back to where it use to be with Horace "Pap" Owens, Doug Overton, "Hank" Gathers, Larry Stewart, Bo Kimble. This program has not only rebounded but has made serious moves by beating powerhouse (Gratz) last year when it counted in the championship.

Now Wright must continue those steps with helping his team achieve another level of winning...you ask Jerrell about this season...he'll tell you "I'M GOING FOR EVERYTHING". Sounds like somebody needs to win everything and prove to those that turning down big programs and committing to LaSalle means being an Explorer is the WRIGHT choice.

IMHOTEP...RIGHT BACK @ IT

What stands in the way of one of the most talented programs around...IMHOTEP CHARTER..that is. The school that features 3 D1 committed & more on the way.

Erik Copes (George Washington)...arguably, the best big man in the area. Nothing seems to escape this guy...especially if it's brought in his territory. Copes aka "The Minister of Defense" has been a terror for people who tend to bring the ball in the paint & expects no different outcome then what took place last year...CITY CHAMPIONSHIP...One difference....IMHOTEP LEFT SOMETHING BEHIND LAST YEAR...STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

I bet if you ask any player on that team...they probably have an empty spot in their heart about what took place this year. So including the commitment of Copes, Ameen Tanksley (Niagara) & David Appolon (Robert Morris) both committed to notable D1 programs, will be there to help lead this team into a championship run. One thing that will be helping this team this year...Khyree Wooten...if the name sounds familiar. This is the guy that was on the team that beat Imhotep to keep them from the state championship appearance when he attended Strawberry Mansion. Wooten will definitely be a hot target this season and with his athletic ability, nothing will be out of his reach.

With the team returning in it's best form, you can only expect great things to happen with this team this year. Nothing seems unreachable for this team but with Coach Bro. Noble....there is definitely a huge opportunity to do some wonderful things this year. Good Luck to the Imhotep Panthers this year.

ANC starts off in the right direction....

Along with being one of the most anticipated teams in the area this year, ANC has alot on their plate. One of the biggest things on their plate is being able to get "their" state championship.

Now...here's the funny part...ANC didn't win the state chip last year...Friends Central did & in doing so, they took a huge lost this year losing 3 big time seniors in Travis Robinson, Dom Morris & HJ Gaskins...who graduated off to Boston University.

Coming back stronger, ANC decided to make a bigger impact on the league this year by doing something that no team in this area had ever seen. HOW ABOUT 3 PLAYERS OFF TO THE BIG EAST...Along with Macolm Gilbert (Pitt) & Rakeem Christmas (Syracuse) announcing their commitment & signing to their future in the BIG EAST, another player on the team decided to take things in his own hands by turning down Duke, UNC, Kentucky & others for Big East power Villanova in Savon Goodman. ANC decided that if they were to be big this year, they had to do it big, it started out as last week playing in the TIP-OFF CLASSIC IN CHICAGO. They not only took home some wins, but the biggest win in country...BEATING THE NUMBER 1 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY; FINDLAY PREP. Findlay features nationally ranked Myck Kabongo, Nick Johnson, & Amir Garrett. Those 3 were no match for the big 3 from ANC. Goodman would take home the MVP of the tournament with a 24 pts. & 14 rebounds performance versus Findlay Prep to commit to Nova a couple days after.

ANC not only made a statement but proved they belong in any league and if I was any team facing this team this year, I would practice hard because this team is coming for much respect and expect nothing but a challenging game and teams that come after this buzz. Coach Givens is doing a great job, putting things together and managing the opportunity of having a great team this year. Congratulations to ANC and their well deserved start.
